Walk This Way – New Recycling Scheme for NHS Walking Aids Proves a Hit

Thanks to the innovative skills of two specialist NHS Forth Valley physiotherapists, 846 walking aids have been returned to NHS Forth Valley in the past 7 months representing a saving of more than £6,500 against the cost of buying replacements.
The walking aid recycling scheme, which was set up initially in Falkirk, has been so successful it is now being rolled out to the Stirling area and there are also plans to extend it to Clackmannanshire.

Parks Litter Pick

Despite the rain yesterday, a good turn out from around 20 members of the community gathered in the park to carry out a litter pick around the parks. The group included a good number from the Alva Beavers and members of Alva Community Resilience Team.

The main area to clear was around the War Memorial in the Johnstone Park ahead of Remembrance Sunday next week, but we also cleared all other areas of the parks, in the end filling many bags with a lot of spent rockets from the previous night as well as empty bottles and cans.

We are looking to establish a Friends of the Parks group so that we might be able to repeat this exercise on a more regular basis, and maybe even look at other ideas of how we can keep the parks a great place to visit.

Thanks to everyone who took part and a special mention to Graham Gilmour of ACC and AGHT for his additional work in co-ordinating this day. Pictures taken by ACC and AGHT member Bryan Denny with permission from those in the pictures to use them.

Flood Alert Issued for Central

28-10-2021 – 16.58 Hrs
Following last nights near miss, we now do have a Flood Alert issued by SEPA for the Central area. Looking at the forecast, heavy rain is expected tomorrow (Friday) between 1pm and 6pm.

The team were out last night and again today checking watercourses, but there is still potential for localised flooding. Water levels are also high, so this might increase the risk.

Please take care, and let us know if you spot any issues.

Remembrance Sunday Park Clean Up and Friends of the Park

In preparation for Remembrance Sunday, which this year falls on Sunday 14 November, Alva Community Council would like to organise a clean-up and litter pick in the Cochrane and Johnstone Parks on Saturday 6 November between 10am and 12.

This is an activity we have organised in the past and has been well attended and a great success and has helped keep the park looking tidy. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and lockdown, we have not been able to organise this kind of activity as often as we would have wanted.

We are aware of a few individuals who carry out regular litter picks while out on their walks, and others who have completed maintenance tasks to keep the parks looking good, and we are grateful to them for doing so. We know that the parks are used by many from both the local community and beyond, and that many people have some great ideas about how the parks could be made to offer even more attractions for those that use them.

To that end, Alva Community Council would like to encourage and support anyone that has such ideas or a love of the parks to consider forming a ‘Friends of the Park’ group in Alva, to help to coordinate ideas and work in the parks.

Please let us know if you want to help at the litter pick on the 6 November, or if you would like to be involved in a ‘Friends of the Park’ group in Alva by sending your details to gburt@alvacommunitycouncil.org.uk
